Crank failures are not unusual at all. Most on this site recommend running at least 32:1 oil ratio to ensure crank bearing life. The 65 is pretty easy with the right tools. I usually spend more time cleaning than actually doing the work. I would replace the 4 tranny bearings too, while you are in there.

The main seal was completely shot so that was the source of the issue. I pulled the main bearing off, the oil seal looked clear and good so I let it go.

A couple of hours work. The only hard part was pulling the harmonic balancer off of the crankshaft. Broke my puny gear puller. Had to go rent a big one from Autozone. Once it was off, old seal out, new seal in (used a big socket and a rubber mallet to tap it in), and put it back together. Pretty simple DIY. Thanks for the tips guys.

Well sometimes.... the front crankshaft seal is usually called a crank seal, or the front timing cover seal but the rear crank seal is (usually) called the Rear Main crank seal. In order to replace the rear seal, the transmission will need to be removed. If its the front, then the harmonic balancer will be removed. $380 sounds cheap.

Install the seal driver portion (red arrow) of MINI tool 11 9 601 to the threaded shaft. Using a wrench, slowly tighten the nut until the tool bottoms out (green arrow).
